How Much Should a San Diego Business Spend on Ads?

How much should a San Diego business spend on ads? Real monthly ranges by industry and area, from East County plumbers to La Jolla med spas, with the math.

On this page

If you are asking how much should a San Diego business spend on ads, the useless answer is "it depends" and the useful answer is "enough to get 30-50 clicks a week, or don't bother." Everything below is about turning that into a real number for your business and your part of the county.

Start from the click, not the budget

San Diego is an expensive market. Cost per click on Google search for local services here generally runs:

  • Cleaning, lawn care, mobile detailing: $4-12
  • Dentists, chiropractors, med spas: $8-25
  • Plumbing, HVAC, electricians: $15-45
  • Roofing, solar, ADU builders: $20-60
  • Personal injury and family law: $40-150+

To learn anything in a month you need a few hundred clicks. At $10 a click that is $2,000-3,000. At $30 a click it is $6,000-9,000. If that number makes you flinch, Google search may not be your first platform, and that is fine.

The reverse math that actually matters

Work backward from a job. Say you are an HVAC company in Escondido and a new system install is worth $2,000 in profit. If you close one in four quoted leads, a lead is worth about $500 to you. If you can buy leads at $100-150 through ads, you should spend as much as you can staff. If leads cost $600, stop and fix the funnel before adding budget.

Do this once for your top service and the budget question mostly answers itself. Most local owners have never done it.

Rough monthly ranges by business type

These are starting points we see work in the county, ad spend only, before any management fee:

  • Single-truck home services (East County, South Bay): $1,000-2,500
  • Multi-truck home services covering the whole county: $4,000-12,000
  • Dental or chiro office: $1,500-4,000
  • Med spa or aesthetics in La Jolla, Del Mar, Carmel Valley: $3,000-8,000
  • Solar or ADU builder: $5,000-15,000
  • Law firm: $5,000-25,000+

Below the low end of each range, campaigns rarely collect enough data to improve. They just quietly spend.

Geography changes the number

The same $2,000 buys very different things across the county. In El Cajon or National City, clicks are cheaper and fewer competitors are bidding, so $2,000 goes a long way. In Rancho Santa Fe, Coronado, and La Jolla, everyone bids on the affluent ZIPs and CPCs climb. Compare How Much Do Google Ads Cost in Rancho Santa Fe? against How Much Do Google Ads Cost in National City? and you will see the spread.

Drive time matters too. A pool company in Poway that agrees to service Chula Vista is signing up for 45 minutes on the 15 and the 805 each way. Better to spend the budget densely inside a 20-minute drive than thinly across the county. The 78 corridor, the I-15 corridor, the coast, and the South Bay are effectively four markets; pick one or two.

Seasonality: do not spend evenly

Flat monthly budgets are lazy. Push spend in the months your category actually sells:

  • HVAC: August-September heat inland; ease off in December-February.
  • Movers, cleaners, storage: PCS season May-August around Pendleton, Miramar, and the 32nd Street Naval Base.
  • Tree service, brush clearing, restoration: fire season, typically September-November when Santa Ana winds arrive.
  • Outdoor and tourism-adjacent (detailing, landscaping, patio work): May-June sag under June Gloom, then pick up in July.
  • Solar: quieter since NEM 3.0, with batteries now the hook.

Management fees on top

If someone runs it for you, expect $1,000-2,500 a month for a single-location business, or 15-20% of spend at larger budgets. A fair rule: the fee should be under a third of your total. If it is half, you are paying for a person, not for results. Our Growth plans start at $2,500 a month including management, which is why we generally tell businesses with sub-$1,000 budgets to run it themselves first; you can see how Arbor runs your ads and decide if that is your stage yet.

One more thing before you set the number

Half the ad budgets in this county are wasted not on bad targeting but on bad landing pages. If your site takes five seconds to load on a phone in Chula Vista or the click-to-call button is below three paragraphs, the budget is irrelevant. Check your free SEO & AI score before you commit.

Pick a number that buys enough clicks to learn, aim it at a drive-time area you can actually serve, and revisit it every 60 days with the cost-per-lead math in hand. That is the whole discipline.
