How to Check If Your Business Shows Up in ChatGPT

A 10 minute way to check if your business shows up in ChatGPT and other AI tools, what the results mean, and how to fix it if you are invisible.

On this page

If you want to check if your business shows up in ChatGPT, you can do it yourself in about ten minutes, and you do not need any special tools. You just need to ask ChatGPT the same questions your customers would ask, then read the answers carefully.

More people are skipping Google and asking AI tools things like "who is the best plumber near me" or "recommend an accountant for a small business." If ChatGPT never mentions you, those customers never hear your name. This guide walks you through the check step by step, explains what the results actually mean, and shows you what to do if you turn out to be invisible.

Why this check matters now

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and similar tools have become a real front door for local businesses. Instead of scrolling a page of ten blue links, people get a short answer with a handful of recommended businesses. Being one of those few names is a bigger win than ranking fifth on a search results page, because there is no fifth place in a three-business answer.

The good news is that AI tools pull from many of the same signals as regular search. If you have been working on your small business SEO, you already have a head start. The work of showing up in AI answers even has its own name, answer engine optimization, and our plain-English guide to AEO covers the full picture. This post is just about the first step: finding out where you stand today.

The 10 minute check, step by step

Step 1: Open ChatGPT with web browsing on

Use the regular ChatGPT app or website. If you have the option to enable search or browsing, turn it on, because that mode is closest to how customers get business recommendations. Answers without browsing lean on older training data, which tells you something different (more on that below).

Step 2: Ask the questions your customers ask

Do not ask "do you know my business?" That is not how customers phrase things. Ask the way a stranger would. Run four or five prompts like these, swapping in your service and city:

  • "Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?"
  • "Recommend a [your service] near [your city] for [a common job you do]"
  • "I need a [your service] in [your city], who should I call?"
  • "What should I look for when hiring a [your service] in [your area]?"
  • "Is [your business name] in [your city] any good?"

The last prompt matters. Asking about your business by name tests whether ChatGPT knows you exist at all, which is a different question from whether it recommends you unprompted.

Step 3: Record what comes back

For each prompt, note three things: whether your business was named, which competitors were named, and which sources the answer cited (ChatGPT often links to the pages it pulled from). Those citations are gold. They tell you exactly which websites are feeding the answers in your market, and our guide on how AI engines choose their sources explains why those particular pages keep winning.

Step 4: Repeat in one or two other AI tools

If you have a few extra minutes, run the same prompts in Perplexity and in Google with AI Overviews. Each tool leans on slightly different sources, so you may show up in one and not another. That is normal, and it helps you see whether you have a general visibility problem or a gap with one specific engine.

Tip: Run this check from a logged-out or incognito session if you can, and phrase prompts like a stranger would. If you have chatted with the AI about your own business before, it may "remember" you in a way a real customer's session never would, which makes your results look better than they are.

What your results actually mean

Here is how to read what you found:

What happenedWhat it meansPriority
You are recommended by name for customer-style questionsYou are visible. Protect it and expand to more question types.Maintain
ChatGPT knows your business when asked directly, but never recommends youYou exist in its sources, but competitors have stronger signals (reviews, content, citations).Medium
ChatGPT has wrong or outdated facts about youYour online information is inconsistent or stale across the web.High
ChatGPT has never heard of youYour online footprint is too thin for AI tools to find. Time to build it.High

One caveat: AI answers vary. Ask the same question twice and you may get slightly different names. Do not panic over a single answer, and do not celebrate over one either. Look at the pattern across four or five prompts. If competitors show up consistently and you never do, that pattern is the real signal. How to fix it if you are invisible

You cannot submit your business to ChatGPT the way you submit a sitemap to Google. Instead, you improve the sources it reads. Here is where to start, in order:

  1. Fix your Google Business Profile first. AI tools lean heavily on it for local recommendations. Make sure it is claimed, complete, and accurate. Our step-by-step Google Business Profile guide covers the whole setup.
  2. Make your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere. If your hours or address differ between your site, Google, and Yelp, AI tools either get confused or get it wrong.
  3. Build up genuine reviews. When ChatGPT recommends "the best" of anything, review volume and quality do a lot of the deciding.
  4. Publish pages that directly answer customer questions. AI engines quote clear, specific, well-organized content. A page that plainly answers "how much does water heater replacement cost in [city]" is far more quotable than a vague services page. Our guide on writing content AI engines quote shows the format that works.
  5. Get listed on the directories AI tools trust. Yelp, industry directories, and local business associations all feed AI answers in many markets.

None of this is exotic. It is mostly good local SEO with an extra emphasis on clear, answerable content. If you want the deeper playbook for turning "ChatGPT knows me" into "ChatGPT recommends me," read how to get your business cited by ChatGPT.

Make it a habit, not a one-time check

AI answers change as the underlying sources change, so put a repeat of this check on your calendar every month or two. Keep a simple note of your prompts and results each time. Within a few months you will see whether your visibility is trending up, and which fixes moved the needle. If you want a fuller checkup while you are at it, work through our AEO audit checklist once a quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors but not me?

Usually because your competitors have stronger public signals: more reviews, more complete business listings, more content that directly answers customer questions, or mentions on directories and local sites. ChatGPT is not choosing against you personally. It is summarizing what the web says, and right now the web says more about them. Strengthen those signals and the answers follow.

Can I pay to show up in ChatGPT answers?

No. There is currently no way to buy placement in ChatGPT's organic recommendations. Visibility comes from the quality and consistency of your online presence: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your mentions across trusted sites. That is actually good news for small businesses, because it rewards steady work rather than ad budgets.

How long does it take to start showing up after I make fixes?

For answers powered by live web browsing, changes to your Google Business Profile, reviews, and website content can influence results within weeks. Information baked into the model's training data updates much more slowly, sometimes taking months to a year. Focus on the sources AI tools read in real time, since that is where you can move fastest.
